AEROSOL RUST CONVERTER
Loctite® Extend Rust Neutralizer is a fast drying, milky white latex rust converter coating that is applied to rusted metal to stop rust, protect the surface & act as a primer for the finish coat. It converts rust to a neutral surface ready to paint over.
|Dries to produce a tough polymer surface||Seals rust and creates a neutral surface that is ready for priming and painting|
|Extremely effective converting mild surface rust||Converts surface rust and prevents rust fading|
|Sets in 20 minutes per coat||Quick completion of project|
- Converting rust on metal surfaces such as iron & steel into a black neutral surfaces prior to painting over rust
- Use on iron railings, barbeque grills, pipes, valves, storage tanks, duct work, automobiles, patio furniture, tools, antiques, mailboxes, lawn mowers, bicycles and lamp posts
Not Recommended For:
- Sanding of neutralized surface after coating has turned black; this breaks the barrier and will cause future rust.
- Use in pure oxygen and/or oxygen rich systems.
- Application in direct sunlight; if temperature is too hot, film may surface dry and bubble.
- Wet steel surfaces but may be damp (i.e. continuous visible film of water).
- Painting over treated areas with zinc or copper based paints or primers.
- Applications in conditions of condensing humidity (i.e. fog, dew), on ice, in rain or in heavy sea (salt) spray atmospheres.
- Application on top of a latex paint as a top coat; an oil-based primer should be used first.
Directions For Best Results:
Well-ventilated area, rubber or plastic gloves, safety glasses.
May stain skin. Wear gloves. Protect finished surfaces. Remove loose rust, dirt & oil. Sand with coarse sandpaper (50 grit) or wire brush. Some rust must remain to be converted. Caution: The product may cause rust if applied to a non-rusted surface. Surface Preparation: Old Steel: All loose or flaky rust, dirt, oil, paint and all other contaminants must be removed. Only conversion of firmly bonded rust will result in durable protection. Loose rust, mill scale & oil paint should be removed preferably by power wire brushing, followed by rinsing with water to remove powder & solubles. Manual wire brushing, chipping & scraping can also be used. Rust Conversion Time & Appearance: Two coats of Loctite® Extend Rust Neutralizer rust converter are recommended. On lightly rusted steel (that has been wire brushed), the first coat will start to develop a violet color within 60 seconds. This will become satin to flat black in appearance. The second coat should dry to a satin black appearance. On heavily rusted steel (that has been wire brushed), the first coat should develop a purple-black color within seconds. The second coat should dry to a black color with gloss varying from flat to satin. The second coat should be applied within 15 to 30 minutes of the first coat.
Ensure material is mixed thoroughly before using. Shake can before use. Remove oil, dirt and grease from surface. Wire brush to remove flaky rust and loose scale. Some surface rust must be present to convert. Brush or sponge on affected area liberally & evenly. A black coating will appear within 5 minutes. Uneven color indicates need for additional coats for maximum protection. Recoat time 15 to 30 minutes. Allow 24 hours minimum to dry before finish paint. Most finish paints will not require any additional primer. However, light color latex and metal filled paints require a solvent based primer on top of Loctite® Extend Rust Neutralizer before finish application. Brushes, rollers & other tools should be cleaned immediately with soap & water. Loctite® Extend Rust Neutralizer rust converter is extremely difficult to remove once dry. Shake spray can well before using. Avoid dripping by spraying a thin coat onto rusted surface 8 to 10 inches (20 – 25 cm) away until surface is lightly & evenly coated. Apply 2 to 3 coats allowing no more than 20 minutes drying time between coats. Final application should dry to a black finish. Wait for 24 hours before applying paint top coat. If not painting, protect from moisture & humidity & use third coat of rust neutralizer 24 hours after applying the second coat. For a smooth finish, sand with 320 grit sandpaper before top coating. Do not sand after top coating. This will break the barrier & will cause future rust. Resistance to Moisture, Solvents & Chemicals: Loctite® Extend Rust Neutralizer rust converter should be top coated for many applications. Continuous exposure of Loctite® Extend Rust Neutralizer to water, solvents or chemicals can cause whitening, blistering or flaking of the latex film. Loctite® Extend Rust Neutralizer should not be used in applications involving continuous immersion in water or fluids. It should be top coated with products known to be resistant to the environment expected. Latex top coats are not recommended without a suitable barrier coat.
Uncured rust neutralizer can be removed with rubbing alcohol or mineral spirits. Cured rust neutralizer can be removed with paint stripper or by sanding.
